The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is native to the temperate and subtropical wetlands of theEast Coast of the United States. It is the most well known of all carnivorous plants and uses an active snap-trap to capture insects. It is a is a perennial plant and goes dormant in winter. The Phoebe cultivar has a vivid green colour with deep red inside the traps. It has large traps with a jagged edge with short lashes.
Size A small, low-lying plant that reaches a maximum of about 15 cm in diameter. It is shaped like a rosette of four to seven leaves that arise from a short subterranean stem. Each stem reaches a maximum size of about three to ten centimeters, depending on the time of year. Flytraps that have more than seven leaves are colonies formed by rosettes that have divided beneath the ground.
Light Sun-loving plant. Requires a minimum of 5 hours sunlight a day.
Water Stand in a saucer containing 3-4 centimeters of water. Let plant drink from the bottom. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Use mineral free water such as rain, reverse osmosis or distilled water for optimum plant health.
Dormancy Plant goes dormant in winter. Reduce water to twice a week and place plant in a cooler spot.
